What is micro suction?
Micro-suction is a safe, gentle, and non-invasive technique for removing ear wax. It is widely regarded as a comfortable and effective method, typically free of pain or discomfort.Ear wax forms naturally and plays an important role in protecting the ear canal. However, in some cases, it can build up and cause symptoms such as hearing loss, a blocked sensation, or discomfort. Micro-suction offers an immediate and effective solution by carefully extracting excess wax, often resulting in instant relief.
Unlike traditional methods such as ear syringing—which may remove all wax, including the protective layer—micro-suction allows for a more precise approach. This enables the clinician to remove only the problematic wax while preserving the ear’s natural defences.
Most patients do not require ear drops prior to the procedure. However, using olive oil drops for 1–2 days beforehand is often recommended to soften the wax and optimise the outcome.
Suitability and Eligibility for Ear Wax Removal
Anyone over the age of 12 years (younger candidates may be suitable following consultation with the nurse via phone)
The procedure is for people who:
- Suffer skin conditions such as dermatitis or psoriasis
Have impacted ear wax - Have issues with the ear canal where syringing has been unsuccessful
- Wear hearing aids
- Have narrow or curvy ear canals
- Have an overproduction of ear wax
- Regularly wear in ear headphones
- Work in dusty environments
Ear wax removal cannot be performed if:
- You have a perforated ear drum
- You currently have grommets
How much does it cost?
Ear wax removal is $100 for the treatment.
Multiple appointments may sometimes be required for removal of wax build up.
