Epistaxis Clinic

Specialist care for people with recurrent or troublesome nosebleeds

Nosebleeds, also known as epistaxis, are very common in children. While most nosebleeds are harmless, some children experience them frequently, have difficulty stopping them, or find that they begin to interfere with everyday life.

Our Nurse Practitioner-led Epistaxis Clinic provides assessment and treatment for children experiencing recurrent or troublesome nosebleeds.

What causes nosebleeds in children?

Most childhood nosebleeds come from small, delicate blood vessels at the front of the nose. These blood vessels can become irritated or dry and may bleed easily.

Common contributing factors can include:

  • Dry air or a dry nasal environment
  • Nose picking or rubbing
  • Frequent nose blowing
  • Nasal irritation
  • Minor trauma to the nose
  • Prominent blood vessels that are prone to bleeding

Every child is different, which is why an assessment can help identify the likely cause and the most appropriate management.

What happens at the Epistaxis Clinic?

During your child’s appointment, our Nurse Practitioner will talk with you and your child about their nosebleeds, including how often they occur, how long they last and whether there are any particular triggers.

The inside of your child’s nose will then be carefully examined to look for areas of dryness, irritation or blood vessels that may be contributing to recurrent bleeding.

Following the assessment, we will discuss the most appropriate treatment and prevention strategies for your child.

Treatment options

Treatment will depend on your child’s individual needs.

For some children, simple measures to keep the inside of the nose moisturised and reduce irritation may be all that is needed.

If a prominent blood vessel is identified as a likely source of recurrent bleeding, cauterisation may be recommended.

What is cauterisation?

Cauterisation is a quick procedure used to treat a small blood vessel inside the nose that is prone to bleeding.

Your Nurse Practitioner will carefully identify the area requiring treatment and use a small applicator to treat the blood vessel. The procedure is performed carefully with your child’s comfort in mind, and everything will be explained to you and your child before treatment begins.

After treatment

You will be provided with instructions on how to care for your child’s nose following treatment.

This may include keeping the inside of the nose moisturised, avoiding picking or rubbing the nose and avoiding activities that may irritate the area while it heals.

The treated area may feel slightly sensitive while it heals.

When should my child be assessed?

Consider an assessment if your child’s nosebleeds are:

  • Frequent or recurring
  • Difficult to stop
  • Lasting for a prolonged period
  • Affecting sleep, school or everyday activities
  • Causing concern for your child or family

Our Nurse Practitioner can assess your child and discuss appropriate management options with you.

Helping prevent recurrent nosebleeds

Simple measures to reduce nasal irritation and keep the inside of the nose moisturised can sometimes help reduce recurrent nosebleeds.

At your appointment, we can provide guidance on appropriate nasal care and prevention strategies for your child.
